I re-read parts of Deep Work and felt the same mix of motivation and skepticism.

What it gets right

  • Focus is trainable
  • Shallow work expands to fill the day
  • Context switching is expensive

What it oversimplifies

Not everyone has the power to block four uninterrupted hours.

A realistic compromise

  • Two 45-minute deep blocks per day
  • One “admin block” for everything else
  • A hard stop time to prevent infinite workdays
